an under ground station. tara moriarty is in san francisco with the video just released by police in hopes of catching the attacker. tara. >> reporter: police are hoping by releasing this surveillance video taken from the muni station here at the corner of anise and market. it was taken october 10th in the evening. you can see a man with a bicycle he just jumped over the pay gates and walking toward the platform. the muni agent walks after him saying there is no bikes allowed. he turns around and attacks him. again it all happened at 7:40 at night and the suspect was last seen here at the corn of van necessary and market. that suspect is described as a white man between 25 and 30 years old about six feet tall and 180 pounds. police are hoping that you recognize the man in this video and if so, give them a call.

live in san francisco i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco police also planning to increase their presence in the mission district following a recent increase in gang violence. the track officers will patrol problem areas near the 16th street and 24th street bart station. there have been four homicides there in the past two weeks. the city is also giving an extra $30,000 to a gang prevention program. california highway patrol officers are now patrolling parts of oakland. around 7:30 last night close to a dozen officers headed out to help oakland police officers. s chp patrols were ordered by governor jerry brown after community leaders plea for help. >> it's devastating to the families. and so if we can get some help around public safety and bringing semblance of safety our city, i think it would go a long way. >> now the chp won't say where officers will patrol or how many days the assignment will last but similar partnerships

have lasted from 60 to 90 days. the search is on for a man and woman caught on tape stealing mail in a fairfield neighborhood. ktvu claudine wong joins us now to talk about the neighborhood effort now top track down the suspects. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, pam. this is the wood lake neighborhood here in fairfield. you can see it's a quiet residential community. when someone started stealing the mail they took matters into their own hands and got this video. i want to show you surveillance video taken by a series of neighbors. it shows a man and woman pulling up to mailboxes and taking mail. they took this video after mail started disappearing and they all got together and were surprised by what they saw. >> grabs the mail, jumps back in the car. the car starts moving before he's back in. so very obvious something is not right there. >> reporter: this all happened within the last week. it was a sort of sting operation by the neighborhood watch group here. they just put up their flags on

their mailbox indicating they had mail in it. they have also gotten on facebook, they put it out on e- mail, they have gotten on local television stations as well to try to put this out there. there is not enough detail on the video to see the clear faces of the people taking the mail or license plate number on that vehicle, but they are hoping someone will see this video and help them. in the meantime they are warning everybody to be more aware. just about an hour from now a key employment report will be released. the last one before next tuesday's president herbal election. the october jobs report will be released at 5:30 a.m.. the unemployment rate is is the canned corise to 7.9%. that is down from 7.8% in september. both president obama and mitt romney are packing in appearances in swing states with just four days left before

election day. president obama has three campaign events in ohio today. the president has now received the endorsement of new york city mayor michael bloomberg an independent. he is endorsing president obama because the president's leadership on climate change. meanwhile mitt romney begins today with a campaign event in wisconsin before he too moves on to ohio. tonight romney will appear with paul ryan at a rally in west chester, ohio. they will be joined by many of romney sportiers including speaker of the house john boehner. there is heartbreak for a n family torn apart by sandy. the bodies of two young boys were found in the marsh. coming up the mother says no one answered about her calls for help. well, today is the day many apple fans have been waiting for. delivery of the knew ipad mini. u.s. apple stores will deliver them to people who placed early

people are saying what are you doing wearing that big coat? well it's cold. a lot of higher clouds are move into the north but it's a dying system. there is not a lot to it. it looked good yesterday. however, after the recent rain, this time of year, the nights are long i. areas of fog. higher clouds will probably -- we really need clear skies. we will see some patchy fog. but it's a dry forecast and increasing high clouds will take us into saturday then. everything says sunny and much, much warmer. recent rain temperature with condensation will occur. if the temperature drops and hits the same as the dew point you get that fog. the inland or tooly fog. 45 napa. to 51 san jose. a lot of 40s here. these higher clouds will fall apart. next rain looks to be maybe

cool, cool. no doubt about it. partly cloudy north bay. mostly sunny elsewhere. the last thing the east coast needs is another storm. but forecasters are predicting a nor'easter around election day. while it won't come close to super storm sandy, it could dump snow in new england and bring rain to the mid atlantic states. winds could reach 30 miles an hour. there is tragedy upon tragedy in new york city as the death toll rises that nears 100 people now in the united states. searchers have recovered the body of two boys swept from their mother's arm on monday. power was out and chefs driving to her mother's house when raging water. when no one would help that is when she lost hold of her two- year-old and four-year-old sons. >> i would be devastated. what would we do? i would die. i would want to be dead with them. i can't believe it. i can't believe it. i can't believe this is happening. >> more than half of a million new yorkers are still without

power. electricity should be restoredder manhattan. people continue to scramble for gas. lines in some gas stations are stretching for miles. more aid from california is heading to new york. southern california utility company is sending about 70 trucks and 120 employees to help restore power to the battered region. two cargo planes left from travis air force base yesterday. cia is denying reports that it delayed rescue efforts after the u.s. consulate in benghazi came under attack. cia security officers were sent within 25 minutes after the first call for help. fox news reported that security teams were reported to stand down. they say no such orders were given. that attack by a grown up of al qaeda linked militants killed chris stevens and three other americans. 4:42 now. three penn state university officials are being charged in connection to the jerry san

sandusky sex abuse scandal. they will be in court today. former president greg is due in court next week. he was sentenced to 30-60 years in prison after being convicted on 45 counts of child sex abuse. moraga school district filed legal papers accusing child sex abuse -- suing the district and three former administrators for failing to protect her from being molested by two middle schoolteachers in the 1990s. the districts first legal response claims she was careless and negligence and responsible for the abuse. they say the phrases are necessary and every potential defense must be raised. the cost of going to college keeps going up. that is why many people are taking advantage of free online courses. but that is not going over well

with some students. free online courses are offered at stanford and uc berkeley. officials at stanford say in the three online courses they offer, about 450,000 people have signed up. but not everyone is happy about that. many students who pay thousands of dollars in tuition say that is just not fair. >> i think it's really cool that berkeley is trying to spread their great education to everywhere but at the same time it's a little frustrating since i'm paying so much. >> most students who sign up for the program are going to school part time. many colleges say the online courses will not meet the full requirements to get a college degree. today a new ad almost hit the web targeting san francisco supervisor christina who voted to reinstate sheriff ross mirkarimi. ivory madison recorded the ad. she first told police about the new year eves fight between mirkarimi and his wife. she thought reporting the ad

would help protect women but said the system didn't work. students at uc berkeley will hold a rally against a controversial city measure on next tuesday's ballot. measure s would ban people from sitting on sidewalks from 7:00 in the morning to 10:00 at night. supporters argue it would clean up the streets but opponents say it would criminalize the homeless. today's rally begins at 1:00 at sprawl plaza. a crack down on rowdy party goers could be taking a step backwards after a couple large fights were caught on camera last year walnut creek formed a special downtown policing team to get things under control. but now staffing shortages and budget cuts are forcing those officers back on to regular patrol. last weekend there were 18 arrests people that live in the city say they are not concerned. >> sometimes people can get out of hand. i don't think in walnut creek it's too bad. i think they could use it

somewhere else. >> the city is also in a battle with vice ultra lounge in walnut creek. they want to cut alcohol serving hours to 11:00 p.m. but the owner says he's appealing that request. a sewage spill is much bigger than initially thought. it was first reported along wood side drive and repaired later that night. the ross valley sanitary district thought 2,000 gallons spilled but new estimates say it was around 88,000 gallons. the cause of the spill is under investigation. they are working with marin county and the town to see how much had entered the area. it's not a jailbreak but several federal agencies are training at the alameda county sheriffs facility. they will be using explosives between 10:00 this morning and 1:00 this afternoon. the san francisco giants have parted ways with aubrey huff. the team declined his $10 million option for 2013 and instead bought him out for $2 million. the 35-year-old was a big part

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. time is 4:51. it could be another few weeks before hayward police get information on a bone fragment. she went missing in 1988. three inch bone believed to be belong to mcgarrett was found in a well. now the fragment was sent to an arizona lab for testing but officials say there was some kind of holdup. on november 19th people plan to gather in front of the market where makayla was kip kidnapped. farm memorial is growing in front of marcus cellar in

international boulevard. owner will bert bartly was shot in an apparent robbery. he had owned store since 1996 and well known in the neighborhood. >> it does not make sense. if you asked him for money he would give it to you. so it doesn't make sense. and we need to find out what happened. >> bartly's killing was oakland's 107th homicide of the year. police and crime stoppers are offering up to $15,000 in reward money. this morning's reopening of the richmond walmart store may be more than a pretty ribbon cut. workers at the store say they will quote make a stand during the ceremony. they say they have been calling for an end to kiss crimination, harassment, and retaliation but says the store has refused its calls. workers at 17 bay area

raley's super markets remain on the job this morning. they agreed to keep working as long as management and the union continue contract talks. they said if no new deal is reached by midnight saturday they will go on strike. they want to freeze workers wages. palo alto police are looking for the shoplifters that stole $11,000 worth of bras from a victoria's secret store. all together 180 bras were stolen. police say the thief or thieves took the garments from the drawers below the display case. the store was packed with customers that day so workers didn't notice anything. 4:54 is the time. sal, how is traffic? >> it's looking good, pam. and brian. right now we are looking pretty good around the bay area. and i would say that it's a good time to be out there. let's start off with -- approaching the 80 split with no major problems coming through. also if you are driving in
